Yoga: Wannabe to Beginner

Yoga is one of those things I’ve always wanted to try but never have. Not with much effort anyway. But in my head, I’ve tried it. I think I’m really great at it. Actually, one day I see myself as this incredibly fit and lean yoga instructor leading my class on the beaches in Florida. Told you this was all in my head.

Living in a small town has it’s enormous advantages. One disadvantage is, to take classes such as this, you almost always have to go out of town. I think that’s why Yoga, Zumba and many others have fell by the wayside. I typically walk, bike, jog, treadmill and use stationary bikes and many outside activities with my daughter. So we are definitely active. But there’s something about the other specific classes that attracts me to them if they were more convenient. I’ve bought a couple DVD’s over the years, but I get bored with the exact same routine over and over. I’ve enjoyed a Pilates one the most. Still, getting outside is the most enjoyable.

Wouldn’t it be great to have early morning Yoga and Pilates in our small town? Outside?  Or am I the only lunatic that thinks that?

Before last night, this was the extent of my Yoga.

I wonder if after only one you tube session, I’m certified to be a Yoga instructor. Without the wine of course. Well, maybe with. Relaxation is key, correct?

Wanting to give Yoga a try because I hear the benefits are quite amazing. Without even giving it a try, I had it in my head that it was too slow, too blah, not my thing.  Though it’s not a high calorie burner, it does improve flexibility, builds muscle strength, improves posture, prevents cartilage and joint breakdown, increases blood flow, promotes healthy heart rate, better balance and sleep, drops blood pressure, helps reduce stress, and to have better focus and relaxation, and probably many many others.

Instead of pretending I’m an exotic yoga goddess in my head. I was determine to try it. Last night I brought up you tube and did a 30 minute beginners yoga session by Kristen McGee. Although she looks like a yoga goddess, I surely did NOT.  It was HARD.  I mean, difficult. And it was a beginners. But I found out that I really did like it. And that I really have no balance at all. But I liked it a lot in fact. And was a little sore and surprised to find out I hadn’t used the muscles in my neck, shoulders and back like that in the last 10 years.

I may check out more on you tube, that way each class would be different and offer a variety. It’s just that my computer up on the desk is not the ideal place for it. I may give another DVD a chance.

Anyone know of a really good Yoga DVD?  I’ve heard good things about the Jillian Michaels one. I really liked that Kristen McGee.  Any others? One that maybe covers beginners through more advanced all on one DVD. Because you know I’ll be that imaginary Yoga goddess by next week.

Yay! Glad you found yoga! I understand the rural thing, but if you can go to a couple of classes, GO. There are so many poses (like every pose) that I think I'm doing correctly only to find out that I need to move my knee or wrist or whatever 1/2" and suddenly the whole pose changes.

Also, the Jillian Michaels videos are NOT for beginners. I actually talked to my yoga teacher about them and she doesn't recommend them. They are "power" yoga, which means you only hold a pose for a few seconds or less before moving on. You have no time to figure the poses out and/or get the right form. There are some good ones on YouTube though!

I had the same opinions as you before I started, but you're right, it's hard!

I loved it ! I guess it surprised me that you still had that "feel good" feeling afterwards. I can see how take a class for at least several sessions would be beneficial. I grantee I wasn't doing any of them perfectly correct. I appreciate the heads up on the Jillian Michaels yoga being power yoga. I may have tried that and given up too quickly. I found a 30-day beginners you tube series I'm going to try, while I scope out the nearest yoga classes offered. Ironically, while at the park yesterday, people were talking about the new community center recently built here in town, inside still unfinished. They heard people referring to one of the rooms as the 'yoga room', soooo……I need to nose around and find out more about that.
